about

GANVIÉ is a culmination of the last two years of my ventures into the realms of different forms of dance/club music, ranging from areas of footwork to drum and bass and attempting to harken across the ocean back to the source of it all: African music. Tested the waters with these tracks hoping to make people sweat with delirious grooves and samples from all across my different musical influences, and what a delight it has been to see people throughly enjoy themselves to this music. I'm extremely excited and nervous to put these out; some of this I've sat on for a couple years or wasn't expecting to put out for a minute or until I could get a label to put it out. But we live in the moment, and at the moment, in my covid-riddled brain, it is time to unleash this stuff. I may have it out on streaming services soon, but for now you have to get it here or hear it live. I also hope to have physicals of this release soon as well and I will of course keep you all updated on when that time comes. For now, thank you endlessly for the continued support, you have no earthly how much it means to me to share something so near and dear to me and watch people rejoice when I offer it out.

Ganvié is a village on Lake Nokoué in Benin, a country from which I have ancestral ties. This village was created in the 1600s by people called the Tofinu, who were running away from being sold into the Transatlantic Slave Trade. When they came upon this place, which was thought to have a demon living there, they found refuge, as the warriors pursuing them would not go near it. So they stayed there, and named it Ganvié, which means in their language "we survived". Now the village is 20,000 people strong, all on water.
